A Veteran's Simple Need

An Army veteran named Larry recently arrived at Veterans Villages of America (V2A) with a straightforward yet essential request: clean clothes. Having worn the same outfit for two weeks, his visit underscores a common but often overlooked need among veterans.

Gratitude for Basic Necessities

Larry's humility was evident as he took only what he needed, expressing profound gratitude for the assistance. His words struck a chord, highlighting the scarcity of such basic help for veterans. His acknowledgment of V2A's support was both touching and sobering, a reminder of the simplicity of his need yet the challenge in fulfilling it elsewhere.

Insights from COL Mike Ross

Following Larry's visit, COL Mike Ross, U.S. Army (Retired) and Chairman of the Board at V2A, reflected on the broader issue: "Hundreds of veterans like Larry are in need. Government programs, while well-intentioned, can be fragmented and inaccessible, leaving many veterans feeling neglected and frustrated. At V2A, we strive to make a real difference, offering whatever support we can to enhance their lives."

V2A's Open Doors

V2A's doors are open to all veterans in need at 1701 S Harrison Street in Little Rock. Every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., we offer a range of items, including men's, women's, and children's clothing, furniture, and household goods, all free of charge for veterans and their immediate families.

Partial Transcript of My Conversation with Larry:

Larry: "Hey, I want to say I appreciate this lady right here. I’ve been living in these clothes for about two weeks right now. This is the best government help I’ve gotten so far."

Me: "It’s not government help."

Larry: "I know it’s not, but still, you have the name 'veteran' on there, you know? But it’s the best help I got. I’ve gotten clothes from here before."

Me: "So you came here today because you needed some clean clothing."

Larry: "My other friends… one just got some furniture from you guys, so he’s happy about that."
